For Britain's 5.8 million unpaid carers, a single night away can be the difference between carrying on and breaking down. New analysis puts a number on what that rest is worth.

London 3rd June 2026 - A single night's rest can save the state thousands by heading off the emergency care that follows when a carer breaks down. New independent analysis published today finds that short hotel breaks for unpaid carers generate £2,617 in social value each break, and return £7.10 to the taxpayer for every £1 invested in carers getting the rest they need.

The research, by economic consultancy Just Economics, applied HM Treasury's own Green Book methodology to Carefree, a charity matching full-time unpaid carers with rooms donated by hotel partners across the UK. In 2025, the 6,446 breaks they delivered saved the state £1.89 million in avoided emergency residential care costs and NHS costs.

The saving comes not from the rooms themselves but from what the rest prevents. When a carer reaches breaking point, the person they look after typically enters emergency residential care - at £1,345 average a week to the state. A short break heads that off: 77 per cent of carers surveyed in the research said it contributed "a lot" to preventing that exact breakdown.

The findings arrive ahead of Carers Week and as the Casey Commission prepares to report on adult social care. The analysis argues that relieving pressure on the NHS and care system requires no new spending, only the redirection of existing funds and the goodwill of hotels already donating rooms that would otherwise sit empty.

The need is stark. Carers registering with Carefree reported average life satisfaction of 4.96 out of 10, against a UK average of 7.4. Three in four said they could not have taken an overnight break at all without Carefree. As Tulay, who took her first overnight break in 18 years, put it: "For many years, I hadn't done anything just for myself. This break reminded me that I matter."

"A short hotel break is not a luxury. It is a highly cost-effective intervention that saves public money by preventing crisis breakdown," said Dr Eva Neitzert, Director of Just Economics.

Charlotte Newman, chief executive of Carefree, added: "The question is no longer whether this works. It's why it isn't everywhere."

Sir Ed Davey, Leader of the Liberal Democrats and a lifelong carer himself, said: "Unpaid carers are truly remarkable. Day in, day out, they selflessly dedicate their lives to care for their loved ones. They are the unsung heroes of our social care system. Without them our NHS and our communities simply would not function. So I welcome this report from Carefree. Ensuring carers have access to respite should be the norm, not a luxury. We will not rest until this is funded and written into law."

The report makes two asks of government, both achievable without new spending: a gift-aid-style tax relief on donated rooms, and for local authorities to cover the £38 admin fee that carers currently pay themselves. Each, it argues, would extend a night's rest to thousands more carers at a fraction of the cost of the breakdowns it prevents.

The figure of 5.8 million unpaid carers is from Carers UK, based on Census 2021 and Scotland's 2022 Census.

Carefree breaks carry a £38 admin fee for 1–2 nights at a partner hotel, and registered carers can access 2 breaks per year.
