With summer on its way, coffee lovers are set to switch up their orders – saying goodbye to cozy flat whites and hello to refreshing iced alternatives. And with the temperature set to increase, searches for iced coffee have skyrocketed by 61% in the last week.

As the cost-of-living crisis shows no signs of slowing down, a typical iced treat could set Brits back a staggering £153 a month. And it appears people have clocked onto the cost, with ‘How to make iced coffee at home’ being searched for nearly 3,000 times in May.

Minor Figures Coffee Community Manager, Bryan Serwatka, says: “We’ve noticed a big trend of customers wanting an iced coffee all year round. So, now’s the time to master the art of the iced coffee at home, impress your friends with your new skill but mostly, get that caffeine hit without the price tag.”

Bryan’s tips to make the perfect iced coffee at home:

1. Make sure you have good quality beans as this will make a huge difference in flavour. Choose a coffee that you enjoy drinking hot, as it will taste even better when iced!

2. Start with a huge cup of ice. This will mean your drink will stay cool and refreshing until the very last sip.

3. Add in your milk or alt milk of choice (we’d recommend the Minor Figures Barista Oat!), before you add the coffee. It will ensure that you get the beautiful layers to impress your guests.

4. If you like it sweet, add a couple of teaspoons of maple syrup to your hot coffee and mix. This ensures the sweetness is evenly distributed throughout the drink.

5. Add your brewed coffee to the glass and stir well (or keep layers for an aesthetically pleasing presentation!) If you do prefer a balanced taste, stirring will help blend the flavours.

6. Iced lattes are best enjoyed immediately to prevent the ice from melting too quickly and diluting the drink. Sip and savour the creamy texture and bold coffee flavour.

7. In a bowl, combine equal parts sugar, water, and instant coffee (preferably specialty grade). Whip the mixture using an electric mixer for a couple of minutes until it becomes fluffy.

8. Fill a glass with your milk of choice, leaving space at the top for your whipped mixture. Our personal preference for this is Minor Figures Barista Oat for its creamy texture and perfect foaming properties.

9. Scoop the whipped coffee on top and get creative with your garnishes to elevate the presentation of your drink. Adding garnishes like lemon slices, cinnamon, or rosemary give an extra touch of flavour and visual appeal.

10. Mix before drinking to ensure that every sip is consistent and delicious.

Bryan added: “If you’re looking to add a little extra texture to your Oat Milk before adding it to the drink, having a whisking milk frother is great. Plus, it never hurts to have a cocktail shaker to be able to easily mix and aerate a drink a little. If I’m having an iced coffee at home, I almost always go for a Japanese-style iced filter coffee. It’s a super simple method that involves brewing a slightly stronger pour-over coffee into a vessel filled over ice. My recipe: Add 80g ice to the vessel you’ll brew into, then on top brew a filter using 16 grams coffee with 170g hot water. The ice will both chill and melt into the overall brew getting it cold but without diluting to an undesirably weak brew. Oh and don’t forget to add the delicious Minor Figures Barista Oat, obviously!”
