Brits trudge on average 20 miles each to do their Christmas shopping with almost a quarter of the population clocking up a distance equivalent to a marathon, research from fitness company Peloton shows.

Researchers found that the average person embarks on four Christmas shopping trips during the festive season with an average outing seeing them march five miles.

That means the whole of the population walks the equivalent of almost a billion extra miles (994m) --- giving Santa a run for his money in delivering the nation’s presents.

Some literally go even further – with 23% saying they cover more than 26 miles extra, the equivalent of a marathon.

But few prepare for the Holiday Workout and more than half of Britons said they were left physically (54%) and mentally (55%) exhausted after the festive season.

Of those nearly a third (35%) said they felt like they ‘needed a holiday after the holiday” and more than a quarter (28%) said it took away from the ‘magic’ of Christmas.

One fifth of people (20%) said they were so exhausted by the time of the big day that it left them feeling irritable with family and friends – perhaps the source of that great unwanted holiday tradition: the Christmas argument.

The research, carried out to support Peloton’s holiday ad, also showed more than half of Brits (53%) said they wished they had more "me time" and more than a third (42%) wished they had more support.

Leanne Hainsby, Peloton instructor and spokesperson, said Brits needed to prepare for the holiday season like they would for a major work out --- and most importantly take time to themselves.

“During this busy holiday season it’s so important to take time for ourselves - remember, self-care is never selfish!”, she said.

Survey Methodology

The research was conducted by Censuswide with 10,083 nationally representative respondents from the UK, USA, Canada, Australia and Germany between 21.11.22 - 28.11.22. Censuswide abide by and employ members of the Market Research Society which is based on the ESOMAR principles and are members of The British Polling Council.
