Wednesday, 13th September, LONDON - Dogs and their owners, led by ethical pet food brand Edgard and Cooper, protest for better dog food in London at Potter’s Field. People and their pets are demanding more transparency and a higher nutritional bar within the pet food industry.

The protest is calling on dog owners to sign a petition which will raise awareness to U.K government issues of meat content standards, transparent labelling, and improved handling and transportation of meat.

Dog owners can read and sign the petition here: https://chng.it/9PTffpRKwt

The petition’s top three demands

●Increased meat content standards: Pet food should be required to contain a significant and truthful proportion of the claimed meat source, ensuring that pets receive the nutrients they need. Shockingly, pet food can currently claim it is made with a specific meat even if it contains as little as 4 per cent of that meat.

●Transparent ingredient labelling: Clear and accurate labelling of pet food ingredients should be mandated to empower pet owners to make informed choices about their pets' diets.

●Improved handling and transportation: Regulations should be enacted to ensure that all meat used in pet food is handled, stored, and transported under proper conditions to guarantee freshness and safety.

The protest follows the findings of a survey of dog owners commissioned by Edgard & Cooper which found that two thirds (64 per cent) of owners believed their dogs should have the same quality of food as humans. The study also found that three quarters (75 per cent) of dog owners would not eat the equivalent food of their dog, such as ‘meat meal’, an overly processed and nutritionally low value meat source food.

ABOUT THE SURVEY

The research of 2,000 UK dog owners was undertaken by Opinium in January 2023 and commissioned by ethical pet food brand Edgard & Cooper who are on a mission to give our pups high-quality dog food that’s naturally nutritious, and good enough – for us – to eat.

ABOUT EDGARD & COOPER

Edgard & Cooper was founded in 2004 by Louis and Koen and named after their beloved dogs, who embarked on a mission to create a dog food recipe that contained fresh meat, vegetables and herbs - at a time when they were told it couldn’t be done. After 2.5 years of development, the recipe was completed, and today Edgard & Cooper is available in 13 countries and includes cat food too. All products come in fully recyclable packaging, and 1% of sales is donated to charity.

WHAT CURRENT LEGISLATION ALLOWS:

oFor pet food to say made with chicken, only needs to be made with 4% chicken - the other 96% can be anything else - it doesn't have to be meat

oPet food contains meat and animal remains like horns, hooves and feathers and often have far less nutritional value

oMeat and by-products above used for pet food can be transported unchilled as long as it’s turned into ‘meat meal’ for up to 24 hours

o‘Meat meal’ is heavily processed meat found in the majority of UK dog food
