Around half of shoppers in Britain (49%) avoid haggling to get a deal on products and services because they find the process too awkward, according to new national research.

The survey of 2,000 people commissioned by www.money.co.uk/savings-accounts reveals the overall impact of awkwardness on the nation’s personal finances.

The study found over a third (36%) of shoppers admitted to being pressured into buying something they didn't want by a salesperson.

Meanwhile, over four in 10 (43%) would pay up to £10 to avoid potential awkwardness, with the figure skyrocketing to 62% among the youngest age demographic aged 16-24.

Manners and finance aren't only confined to spending, according to the survey, with nearly two-thirds (63%) saying they wouldn't ask for money back that's owed to them if it was under £5.

Those who would request repayment would typically wait an average of more than six weeks before asking the question, the research found.

Britons’ aversion to confrontation extends even further, the research shows, with a third (33%) admitting they've been overcharged for a product or service but chose not to complain because they found it too awkward.

When it comes to haggling for a deal, the data reveals an interesting regional breakdown, with more than half of people in Leeds (56%), Plymouth (54%), Newcastle (53%), Liverpool (53%) and London (52%) refusing to barter for a bargain because they find it too awkward.

At the other end of the spectrum, people in Southampton (36%) are the least likely to avoid haggling for a deal, followed by residents of Brighton (38%), Edinburgh (38%), Nottingham (43%) and Bristol (43%).

Lucinda O’Brien, expert at money.co.uk savings accounts, said: ”While awkwardness may be perceived as a quirky British trait, our research shows it can also have a significant impact on personal finances.

“Amid the cost of living crisis, Brits are becoming increasingly savvy spenders, with latest ONS data* showing around half (48%) of adults are shopping around more to get good prices on products and services.

“Securing the best deals shouldn’t be something we shy away from - with the right information and resources, you can negotiate confidently to get the best price.

“If you’re making regular savings on everyday products and services, you’ve got more scope to build up your savings, which is increasingly important given the current financial climate.

“If you haven’t already opened a savings account, now is the time. It’s quick and easy, and many can be opened for as little as £1.”

RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH

It's crucial to research and understand the market value of the product or service you're interested in. This may include looking at similar products or services, reading customer reviews, and comparing prices from various sellers or providers.

PERSONALITY MATTERS

Your approach and attitude are vital when haggling, so embark on the negotiation in a friendly and respectful manner. Being polite and courteous can set a positive tone for the conversation. Maintain eye contact, speak clearly, and assert your points with confidence.

START LOW (BUT NOT TOO LOW)

When initiating the negotiation, begin with an offer that is lower than the maximum price you're willing to pay in order to create room for the negotiation to progress. However, be careful not to go too low with your first offer, as this can be seen as disrespectful or insincere.

NEGOTIATE

Successful haggling often involves incremental negotiations. After your initial offer, allow the seller to respond with a counteroffer, as this back-and-forth can lead to a mutually acceptable price.

WALK AWAY IF YOU HAVE TO

Sometimes, the seller may not be willing to meet your desired price, and that's okay. Be prepared to walk away if the deal doesn't align with your expectations or budget.
