· New research shows tackling gum disease-related type 2 diabetes could see cost savings equivalent to paying almost 8,000 (7,800) nurse salaries a year (£270 million).(i,ii)

More than 300,000 people in the UK could reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes over the next decade through improving their gum health, according to new global research by Economist Impact, supported by global consumer healthcare company, Haleon.(3)

Studies show that people with gum disease are 26% more likely to develop type 2 diabetes compared to those without. Gum disease has both local and systemic health impacts – chronic inflammation from gum disease can contribute to insulin resistance, a key feature of type 2 diabetes.(vi,vii)

The Health Inclusivity Index, a global project that models the economic impact of health inclusivity, found that by improving gum health through professional periodontal care, interdental cleaning, and twice daily brushing with a fluoridated toothpaste, more than 300,000 people in the UK could reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes over the next decade, resulting in direct healthcare savings of almost £2.7 billion.(1,2,3)
