How energy-conscious are you? Almost all (98%) of us took at least one energy-saving measure before the winter*, but new research has found many may still be missing one simple trick.

With Ofgem announcing its latest energy price cap on Monday, and Wednesday marking one month until the average bill rises under the government’s Energy Price Guarantee (EPG), many will once again look inwards for ways they can reduce their bills.

Turning down the boiler temperature flow on a combi-boiler – the temperature which your water heats up to, before circulating round the radiators in your home – can save on both energy bills and carbon emissions.

However, 42% admit they don’t know the difference between boiler temperature and thermostat temperature, while half (50%) do know what their boiler temperature is currently set at. Meanwhile, almost one in ten (9%) do not even know where their boiler is in their home – rising to one in five (20%) of those aged 16-24.

According to charitable body Nesta – those behind The Money Saving Boiler Challenge – if their target 10 million households took part, a total £1bn could be wiped off UK energy bills, while 1.7 million tonnes of carbon emissions could be saved.

Since the challenge launched in October, more than 200,000 have taken part and turned down their boiler flow temperature to 60°c or below.

And with Lords recently slamming the success of the government’s rollout of low-carbon heat pumps – the scheme designed to eventually replace all combi-boilers to more energy-efficient alternatives – it looks like they are here to stay.
