Animal charity, Brooke, has set up a relief camp in Buner to treat donkeys, horses and livestock.

Pakistan's animals continue to face escalating threats from flooding, after waves have devastated its northern region.

Working animal charity Brooke has set up an emergency relief camp in Buner to treat affected animals, alongside aid agencies.

An estimated 5,584 animals(1), including horses, donkeys, mules, goats and sheep, have perished during flash floods, landslides and cloudbursts across Pakistan.

Dr Javed Gondal, CEO of Brooke Pakistan said:

"More than 400 equines are dead in Buner…the people are depressed. If these animals are neglected, then many families are affected. People will struggle to maintain their lives.”

As the lifeline for households across Pakistan and worldwide, farm animals, particularly horses, donkeys and mules, are essential in helping with agriculture and carrying water.

Brooke Pakistan is providing humanitarian and animal relief – offering emergency veterinary services and supporting the resilience of animal-owning families and exploring the need for relief work in other parts of Pakistan hit by the floods, such as the Sindh province.

The charity’s work will benefit 1,000 working animals and 6,000 animal-owning families in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, working with Pakistan's National Disaster Management Authority(2) and Livestock Department.

"The devastating floods in Pakistan are a stark reminder that when disaster strikes, it is not only people who suffer but also the animals they depend on.

“We need to integrate animals in disaster risk and response protocols, so that they are evacuated and provided with necessary care when disasters strike. Working animals in particular are the unsung heroes in disaster response, as they literally carry people out of disaster zones on their backs.

“Aid must reach livestock-owning communities who are often most vulnerable and furthest left behind, and often below the radar of government assistance. Aid provisions for animals are vital as every working horse or donkey supports a family of six or more. In the aftermath of disasters, those animals can help people rebuild damaged infrastructure and livelihoods.”
