The start of 2026 has been pretty dark in many ways. Whether you want to perk up a loved one or a random stranger, these tips will leave them and you feeling uplifted.’

Here are Sarah-Jane’s top 10 suggestions that are completely free:

1. Ask for the manager. If you get great service today in a restaurant or shop, don’t just tell that staff member, tell the manager! Let them get double the praise.

2. Leave a five-star review. Small businesses rely on great reviews. Take a few minutes to let them know how much you have loved a recent purchase.

3. Like and comment. Got a mate with a side hustle or creative project? A like or comment on their socials. Engagement helps the algorithm and boosts confidence.

4. Pick up litter. Spot some litter that needs picking up? Do it! It’s an act of kindness for your community and the planet.

5. Write a note. Grab a Post-it note and jot down some words of encouragement for a stranger to find. A simple ‘You’ve got this’ on a note and left in a library book or gym locker can really make someone's day.

6. Pass on a book. If there’s a book you loved, pass it on with a note saying, “I loved this book, I think you will too, enjoy!”

7. Give a compliment. Tell a stranger you love their outfit. Let a friend or partner know how funny or smart they are. It will really boost their day and the days and months to come.

8. Send a song. Send a special song to a partner or friend. Send a song that you both resonate with and tell them how much you love that memory.

9. Act of service. From running a bath for your partner, to cleaning the car. Think of something you don’t normally do and surprise them today.

10. Get cooking. Not only is it Random Act of Kindness Day, but it’s Shrove Tuesday! Make some delicious pancakes for the person you love.
