A Cornish skatepark is the only one of its kind in Europe - as it has a unique feature that means anyone can take part without worrying about getting hurt. TR7 Indoor Skatepark CIC reopened earlier this year after moving from their old home in Newquay. Now they're operating from a bespoke 370sq ft facility in Roche that has a mini ramp, rails, ledges, and hips, as well as an open area for beginners.

But until now, they've been missing a feature that made their old skatepark unique - a rope system that acts as a safety harness or handle. Now, thanks to a collaboration with local company Vector Rope Access, skaters of any ability can use the system which will help them balance on the mini ramp - meaning even the most beginner of skateboarders can attempt tricks and learn the rhythm of the ramp without getting hurt.

Martina Biquard said: "We've been working hard behind the scenes to get the rope system installed, and we're glad to say that now it's up and running - so swing through to give it a go!"

Chaz Merryweather continued: "Helping different individuals of all ages with different disabilities is important to us, and this rope system does that as it takes away the risk of injury. It helps build confidence and is a great way to learn - skaters take away what they've learned and can use it on ramps at their local park. Also, anyone who has had an injury or who uses their body for work can now skate stress-free as it takes away that risk of getting hurt again, allowing them to try something new."

"There has been a lot of controversy around the rope as some say it's 'cheating', but we see it as a great way to learn how to skate, build confidence, and give it a go knowing you're not gonna fall and get injured."

One skater said: "As a physio I think this is a brilliant way to learn the skill with safety. I recently learned to ollie using an overhead rope and it fast-tracked me so much. It's just a smart and safe way to break it down and reduce the injuries. As you progress you rely less on the rope."

Run by wife and husband team Martina Biquard and Chaz Merryweather, TR7 Indoor Skatepark CIC aims to provide a safe space for the Cornwall skate community. At the skatepark, skateboarders can find a place away from the busy crowds at local skateparks in summer, and in winter a dry area away from the rain.

They also run a series of community groups for marginalised or unrepresented communities - once a month there is the 'Board Mums' event for mothers, last Monday they hosted a screening of "SMiLe," organised in collaboration with The Ben Raemers foundation that aims to tackle mental health crises and prevent suicide, and they also run events to support the LGBTQ+ society.

Speaking previously, a spokesperson said: "Skateboarding is for everyone and we want all skaters to feel welcome and included at TR7. Skateboarding is growing colossally worldwide and we're proud to represent Cornish skateboarders, and we want to once again provide a safe space where anyone interested can learn and practice, regardless of the weather or their abilities."
