More than 100 children, women and men from all over the UK have signed up for the 2024 British National Waterski Championships which take place at Hazelwood Ski World in Lincoln from 28 August to 1 September.

They will compete in the three events of slalom, tricks and jump across the age categories from Under-10s to Over-75s. There is also an adaptive category for disabled skiers. A Youth Festival, aimed at giving novice youngsters a taste of competition, will run alongside the Championships.

The Nationals are UK’s biggest celebration of waterskiing with first-timers, veterans, members of the GB squad and professional waterskiers all taking part and challenging for the coveted title of British Champion.

The oldest competitor is Alan Robertson (78) of North Walsham in Norfolk. He still often competes for GB at the senior level in men’s slalom.

Many of the competitors will arrive at the Nationals fresh from representing their country at major international Championships.

The seniors returned this week from the Europe & Africa Over-35s Championships in Spain with 11 medals, including five golds. Among them was Kelly Atkins from King’s Lynn, Norfolk, who picked up a gold, a silver and three bronzes. She will be at the Nationals with her teenaged daughter, Summer Pollard, who will compete in the Under-17s.

The GB Under-14s and Under-17s squads are currently in Italy for the Europe & Africa Junior Championships which begin this Wednesday and will head straight to Lincoln for the Nationals.

The Nationals are very much a family affair with brothers, sisters, parents and spouses competing, officiating -or both - including the Hazelwoods who own and run the site. Rob Hazelwood (25) is a professional waterskier and will compete in the Open category. Also taking to the water will be two of his uncles – the legendary Mike Hazelwood MBE, who won the Overall World Waterski title in 1977 – and Tim Hazelwood, along with Tim’s wife, Kate. Rob’s brother, Ben, their parents, George and Flo Hazelwood and their aunt and uncle, Gill and Ady Asher, will all act as officials.

The 2024 British National Waterski Championships will take place at Hazelwood Ski World, Moor Lane, Thorpe-on-the-Hill, Lincoln, LN6 9BW from Wednesday 28 August to Sunday 1 September.

WATER SKIING EXPLAINED

Competitions have a winner in each of the three events and an overall winner where the points scored for each event contribute to the overall result.

Jumping

This dramatic spectator event involves skiing over a ramp at speeds of up to 70mph (for the top skiers), taking off and landing on the water to ski away. Each skier has three attempts at the ramp. There are no style points. All that matters is the distance achieved.

Slalom

The boat travels at a constant speed in a straight line down the middle of the slalom course. The top speed is 58kph (36mph) for men and 55kph (34mph) for women. The skier, on a single ski, must go through the entrance gates - a pair of buoys in the middle of the course - then virage from side to side across the boat wakes, successfully rounding six turn buoys before going through the exit gates.

Each successful pass results in the rope being shortened, making it increasingly difficult to reach the turn buoys. Eventually, the rope length becomes less than the distance from the boat to the turn buoys so the skier has to use body length and reach to round the buoys. The winner is the skier who completes the most turn buoys at the shortest rope length.

Tricks

The skier is given two 20-second passes to complete as many different tricks as possible. These can vary from a simple 180 turn to a somersault with a twist. There are also ‘toehold’ tricks where the skier holds the rope with one foot. Each trick is worth a given number of points according to difficulty. Points are awarded only if the tricks are deemed to have been successfully performed.
