Three of the world’s biggest backgammon tournaments come to London in the summer.

The World Team, the World Women’s Team and the World Individual champions will be held at the Mercure Hotel at Earl’s Court from August 24-30.

It’s the first time that the UK has hosted these events and it will be the biggest backgammon event ever to be held in the country.

Scores of players and teams from across the world will compete for the championships which have been organised by the World Backgammon Federation (WBGF) and the UK Backgammon Federation (UKBGF), sponsored by Mind Sports Olympiad and Play Strategy.

Backgammon is one of the oldest games to be played, dating back thousands of years. It’s a game of strategy and luck – as players move chequers around a board determined by the roll of dice.

WBGF president Bernhard Mayr said: “We’re delighted that our flagship events are being held in London in the summer. The UK is one of the strongest backgammon nations in the world and I’m sure this event will be a huge success.

UKBGF chair Julia Hayward added: “It’s a real honour for the UK to have been chosen to host these championships, with the best players in the world expected to take part.

”Backgammon is booming in the UK at the moment, with new players starting to play and new clubs being set up. We hope this event will give added momentum to interest in the game.”
