Boomi Acquires Elementary Data to Bring Trusted, Governed Data to the AI Era

Key Takeaways

What Boomi acquired. Elementary provides unified observability, quality, governance, and discovery. Founded in 2022, Elementary began as an open-source project — now adopted by 1,500+ data teams, with 1.1M + monthly downloads, and a ~4,000-member community. In 2024, it launched Elementary Cloud which added enterprise-grade capabilities on that open-source foundation.
Why this acquisition matters. AI is only as trustworthy as the data behind it. As enterprises hand decisions and actions to AI agents, unreliable data can quietly break the business. Elementary addresses that risk at the root—empowering data teams to detect, triage, and resolve data issues before they reach dashboards, models, devices, and AI agents, thereby closing the data-reliability gap that stalls enterprise AI in production.
How Elementary augments the Boomi Enterprise Platform. Elementary provides agent-driven pipeline, data, and context monitoring; column-level lineage, a data catalog, health scores, an MCP server that exposes data context to AI tools and agents, and AI agents that automate data testing, incident triage, governance, and performance optimization across apps, devices, and data. Elementary complements the Boomi Enterprise Platform's Active Data Foundation, which continuously moves, grounds and governs data, delivering it with context to the applications, devices, and agents that need it. Unlike traditional data platforms focused on data at rest, the Active Data Foundation puts data in motion, ensuring trusted, contextualized data is available wherever it's needed.

Why data reliability is the new AI bottleneck

For many years, data reliability was treated as back-office hygiene, something data teams handled quietly so dashboards didn’t break.

AI has ended that era. As enterprises hand real decisions and actions to AI agents, the reliability of the underlying data becomes the single point of failure for the whole system: an agent that acts on stale, wrong, or ungoverned data doesn’t just produce a bad chart — it takes a bad action, at scale, before anyone notices. Elementary closes that gap at the root, and brings it natively into the platform enterprises use to activate data for AI.

As enterprises scale AI and agentic workflows, data exists everywhere, flowing dynamically across pipelines in motion as well as sitting at rest in warehouses. Ensuring that this continuous flow of data is reliable has become the difference between AI that can be trusted in production and AI that introduces risk. The trust gap is already measurable: in a Forrester Consulting study commissioned by Boomi (July 2026), 86% of leaders said their organizations had moved beyond AI agent pilots, but only 34% said they trust the actions their agentic systems take, and organizations that deployed agents before they were ready reported an average of $2.1 million in added cost. Elementary addresses the root of that gap — the data itself — by empowering data teams to detect, triage, and resolve data issues before they reach dashboards, models, devices, and AI agents.

“AI is only as trustworthy as the data behind it,” said Steve Lucas, Chairman and CEO of Boomi. “With Elementary, adopted by more than 1,500 data teams, with a ~4,000-member community, and downloaded over a million times a month, we’re adding the observability, quality, and governance layer that ensures the data activating our customers’ AI and agents is reliable, explainable, and enterprise-ready.”

Trusted data for the AI era

Elementary began as an open-source project in 2022 and has since been adopted by 1,500+ data teams, with 1.1M + monthly downloads, and a ~4,000-member community. Its code-first design made data observability a natural part of the modern data workflow, while Elementary Cloud added the enterprise-grade capabilities teams need to scale. With the acquisition, Boomi customers will gain access to capabilities including:

Agent-driven pipeline monitoring that autonomously detects freshness, volume, and quality anomalies before they reach downstream assets.
Column-level lineage across ingestion, transformation, semantic layers, BI, and AI.
Governance and discovery with a shared catalog, ownership, tags, and health scores.
An MCP server that exposes data context and health to AI tools and agents.
AI agents that automate test creation, incident triage, governance, and performance optimization.

“We started Elementary on a simple conviction: data teams deserved the same reliability tooling that software engineering teams have relied on for years. AI made that conviction urgent,” said Maayan Salom, CEO and Co-Founder of Elementary. “When agents act on your data at machine speed, trust in that data stops being a nice-to-have and becomes the foundation the whole enterprise stands on. Joining Boomi, with 30,000+ customers and 800+ partners, lets us make trusted data the default for the AI era, not the exception. We're just getting started.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is data observability?
Data observability is the continuous monitoring of data and the pipelines that produce it — tracking freshness, volume, schema changes, lineage, and quality — so teams catch and resolve issues before they reach dashboards, models, devices, or AI agents. Elementary unifies observability, quality, governance, and discovery.

Q: What's the difference between data observability and data quality?
Data quality measures whether a specific dataset is fit for use (accurate, complete, consistent). Data observability monitors, in real time and end to end, whether the systems and pipelines producing that data can be trusted to deliver it correctly. They're complementary: quality sets the standards, observability provides the continuous early-warning system. Elementary unifies both, plus governance and discovery, in one solution.

Q: What does "data readiness for AI" (AI-ready data) mean?
AI-ready data is data reliable, accessible, contextual, and governed enough for a model or agent to use safely in a real workflow — not just data that is "clean" or "in the cloud." AI-ready data carries business context (metadata, lineage, definitions) and is continuously monitored for freshness and drift. Elementary helps teams make data AI-ready by making pipelines observable, tested, and governed, while still allowing for a human-in-the-loop.

Q: Why do AI agents need reliable data, and what happens without it?
Agents act on data — querying systems and devices, triggering workflows, making decisions. Unreliable data produces wrong actions, hallucinations, and costly errors that are hard to trace. This is exactly why Boomi acquired Elementary: AI is only as trustworthy as the data behind it.

Q: How is data observability different from data governance?
Governance defines the policies, ownership, and access rules for data; observability continuously verifies that data and pipelines actually behave as expected. Elementary brings observability, quality, governance, and discovery together so policy and monitoring reinforce each other.

Q: What signals does data observability monitor?
Typically freshness (is it up to date?), volume (did the expected amount arrive?), schema (did the structure change?), lineage (how does it flow and what does it affect?), and quality/distribution (are values in expected ranges?). Elementary monitors these and flags anomalies before they hit downstream assets.

Q: What is column-level data lineage and why does it matter?
Column-level lineage traces how each field is produced from source through transformations to BI and AI, showing what feeds it and what it impacts. It's essential for debugging, impact analysis, governance, and trusting the data AI acts on. Elementary provides this important type of data lineage across the stack.

Q: How do AI agents get safe, in-context access to enterprise data?
Agents need governed access plus business context (definitions, lineage, ownership). An MCP (Model Context Protocol) server exposes that data context and health to AI tools and agents in a standard way — Elementary provides this type of governed access, complementing Boomi's governed connectivity.

Q: How does this acquisition fit Boomi's strategy, and how does it relate to Rivery and Lunar.dev?
Together these acquisitions build a data-to-AI stack: data integration (Rivery), governed AI connectivity and gateway (Lunar.dev), and now trusted, observable data (Elementary). Boomi is assembling the layers enterprises need to run AI on data they can trust.

Q: Is this consolidation in the data observability market? What does it signal?
This acquisition is yet more evidence that data reliability is becoming core AI infrastructure rather than remaining a standalone IT niche. Observability now joins integration, governance, and connectivity in a single platform as enterprises operationalize AI.

Q: What happens to the open-source project and its community?
There are no immediate changes planned for the open-source project, including the repository, releases, or how the community uses it. Boomi intends to continue supporting the project and its community as a responsible steward.
