NOT ON THE HIGH STREET UNVEIL GENDER GIFT GAP LIST TO HELP MEN FEEL MORE SPECIAL AT GIFTING MOMENTS

JUNE 2023: Father’s Day is fast-approaching, but four in ten adults (39%) have no idea, according to new research from popular online marketplace, Not On The High Street. Findings from the nationally representative survey of 2,000 British adults also uncovered that men believe they receive the worse gifts on special occasions, with a staggering eight in ten men (80%) believing that other genders receive better and more considered gifts than they do.

If you were thinking about buying your dad a pair of socks, maybe give it some more thought, as a third (34%) of British men reported feeling regularly disappointed by the gifts they receive. The survey revealed that over a quarter of men described the gifts they receive as repetitive and uninspiring (28%), which can leave them feeling unloved (26%) or sad (30%). One in five men (20%) say they have given up expecting good presents.

A fifth of adults (22%) admitted to having forgotten to give their dad so much as a call or text on Father’s Day (sons were worse than daughters 28% vs 17%). With a few days until the celebratory day, it’s still possible to treat your papa to something that will make him feel special.

Almost a third of men (29%) think they get more stereotypical gifts than other genders. With socks (48%), aftershave (37%), chocolate (32%) and DIY gifts (12) being among the gifts they receive most often on repeat. As inspiration for less-obvious gifts to buy, a third of men (35%) would like to be taken out for a meal, a fifth (18%) would love a voucher for a massage or spa day with one in six (17%) dreaming of glowing skin from a face cream treat. Cooking classes, pedicures and flowers made the top 20 gifts that men would love to receive, as did plants and scented candles.

The research also highlights that a third of the population (33%) buy gifts based on gender stereotypes, with less than half (46%) focusing on the recipient's personality when choosing presents. In light of this Not On The High Street has launched its Gender Gift Gap edit to move beyond traditional gender norms and stereotypes in gift-giving and focus on personality.
