BRITS’ BIGGEST WORRIES OF BEING BROKEN INTO WHILST AWAY ARE REVEALED – INCLUDING LOSING ITEMS OF SENTIMENTAL VALUE, THE STRESS, AND THE FINANCIAL IMPACT

• As many plan holidays to escape the dark winter days, research from security experts Yale reveals a whopping 56% of Brits worry about being broken into whilst away

• Losing sentimental items (50%), the stress (43%) and the financial impact (27%) are listed as some of the biggest worries about being broken into

• Family photos, pets and the car listed as items Brits would be most upset about if stolen whilst away

• Despite this, only 29% of Brits are currently using burglar alarms to prevent break ins

LONDON, UK – NOVEMBER 2023 – As the weather turns and Brits are experiencing colder and darker days, it’s no surprise many of us are planning a winter holiday escape. Whether it’s swapping the British darker nights for beach days in the sun, exploring tourist hotspots, or simply leaving home for a few days to visit family and friends over the festive season, the last thing we want to worry about is how safe our homes are whilst we’re away. However, new research from security experts Yale UK reveals over half of Brits (56%) worry about their home being broken into whilst on holiday or going away.

The study reveals Brit’s biggest worries about a break-in, with over half noting that they would be unable to feel safe in their own homes afterwards (55%) and half (50%) fearing items of sentimental value being stolen and lost forever. The associated stress (43%), the impact that it would have on family (33%) and the financial impact (27%) were also listed as some of the biggest concerns about being broken into.

Family photos (35%), pets (27%), the car (24%) and family heirlooms (24%) rank as some of the top items that Brits would be most upset about losing. However, given Brit’s concerns about the safety of their homes, only 29% of Brits are using burglar alarms to prevent break-ins – making homes & neighbourhoods throughout the UK much less secure.

When it comes to protective measures before leaving the house, less than half (49%) admit to double-checking the doors and windows before going out, and nearly a third (29%) state that they would feel more reassured about home security if they could check on their home whilst away. Additional security measures used by Brits to prevent break-ins include window locks (47%), outdoor cameras (27%), video doorbells (24%) and motion sensor lights (24%).
