Two weeks to go until new energy price cap – how to cut your bills as costs jump £221

24 June 2026, London, UK – Households are facing an average £221 jump in their annual energy bills in just two weeks, as the Ofgem energy Price Cap rises 13% from 1 July, pushing the typical annual bill to £1,862 – but Switch Together says there are options for consumers to cut down on their bills.

With continued volatility in energy markets, driven by global tensions, households remain exposed to sudden price swings. More are now reviewing their options, from fixing tariffs to investing in solar, with the latest increase acting as a catalyst for change.

George Frost, UK Head at Switch Together, says: “If I laid £200 in crisp banknotes in front of you and said you can take it or leave it, what would you do? By not switching, you are turning your back and could be leaving that £200 on the table. In some cases, households could secure a fixed deal below the cap, including through collective schemes where suppliers compete to offer lower tariffs, but too many are not exploring their options or assume there is little they can do.”

“We are also seeing more people switch off from their energy bills altogether. For some, it is starting to feel like a fixed cost they cannot influence, when in reality there are still ways to bring it down, whether that is switching on your own or as part of a group through collective switching.

While switching tariffs can provide immediate savings, more households are also looking at longer-term ways to reduce their exposure to rising energy costs altogether. With the topic of energy dependence climbing up the agenda in light of the conflict in the Middle East, new Switch Together research shows there has been an increase in solar panel installations across the UK.

180k households installed solar panels in the twelve months to 31 May 2026* – a 9% increase from the 164k installations that took place the previous year, as more households move ahead with fitting panels to reduce bills.

At the same time, falling costs are making solar more accessible. The average price of a certified home solar PV system dropped again in 2025 to just over £7,500** - around £500 less than the year before.

George Frost adds: “Demand for solar continues but it’s no longer just about saving money anymore – it is about taking control. With ongoing price volatility and global uncertainty, more households are looking at how they can reduce their reliance on the grid and protect themselves from future rises. We expect demand for renewable solutions to keep rising throughout the rest of 2026, although clearer and more consistent messaging on renewables could help more households move from consideration to installation more quickly.”
