• The UK's 1.7 million homes with solar panels are set to collectively generate electricity worth up to £12.6 million this solstice weekend - more than 51 million kWh across the two days, at current energy price cap rates - according to E.ON Next data

• With nearly 17 hours of daylight around the solstice, households can use, export or store electricity their panels generate

• And for solar and battery households, E.ON Next’s Next Optimise tariff helped customers save around £18 a month in pilot findings - with potential annual savings close to £300

Households with solar panels fitted are set to see some of their biggest solar savings of the year this summer solstice weekend.

Across nearly 17 hours of daylight each day, the UK's 1.7 million homes with solar panels are expected to collectively generate up to £12.6 million worth of electricity this weekend alone, according to data from E.ON Next.

Solar installations across the UK have increased significantly in recent years, as households look to take greater control of their energy use and reduce reliance on the grid. Summer brings longer days and more generation giving households access to greater savings than at any other point in the year.

Every unit of electricity generated by a household solar panel system can be put to work. Use it directly in the home, export surplus electricity back to the grid through the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), or store it in a home battery and draw on it later when you need it.

E.ON Next modelling suggests that around 30% of the solar energy generated on a typical June day is used directly within the home. The rest can be sold back to the grid through a SEG tariff — or stored in a home battery for later.

Customers on E.ON Next's Next Optimise tariff can maximise that value further, with the service automatically charging batteries when wholesale prices are low and exporting stored energy when they rise. Pilot data shows customers save an average of £18 a month, with modelling suggesting close to £300 a year.

Phil Gilbert, Director – Next Zero Delivery at E.ON Next, said: "Solar is becoming increasingly popular as households look to take control of their energy use and lower their bills. Consumer interest in solar and battery is strong and the summer solstice is one of the times when households can see the most from their solar investment, with longer days and higher levels of generation than at any other point in the year.

"Next Optimise gives customers a simpler, smarter way to manage their home energy so they keep more of what their solar generates, without any extra effort."

Data methodology

According to government figures, there are 1.7 million domestic solar panel installations in the UK, with a total rated output of nearly 6,700 MW — an average capacity of 4kW per household [Link to government figures: https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/solar-photovoltaics-deployment].

Using historic solar irradiance data for the UK Midlands as a representative national location, a typical system generates an average of 3.82kWh per kW each day around the summer solstice — meaning the average 4kW system produces approximately 30.3kWh across the two days [Historic solar irradiance data links to: https://re.jrc.ec.europa.eu/pvg_tools/en]

Across 1.7 million homes, that amounts to more than 51 million kWh of electricity generated over the solstice weekend — valued at £12.6 million using Ofgem's Q2 2026 price cap average unit rate of 24.67p/kWh.
