Three British riders will compete for their country at the 2024 IWWF World Wakeboard Championships, which get underway in China in just over a week’s time.

The small team of boat wakeboarders is made up of two women and one man who will be accompanied by a Squad Manager.

Charlotte Millward (29) from Stafford and Melissa Lock (23) from Thurmaston in Leicestershire will compete in the Open Women division. Mark Osmond (58) from Elstead in Surrey competes in Senior Men. Jeremy Nevill from Portishead in Somerset is the Squad Manager.

This will be the fourth World Championships for Charlotte Millward, who trains at Chasewater Sports Centre in Staffordshire. She has also competed at 9 European Championships and, in 2011, was the European Junior Women’s Champion. She is the reigning British Champion in Open Women.

It will be the third World Championships for Melissa Lock, who trains at Charnwood Waterski & Wakeboard Club in Leicestershire. She has also represented GB at 9 European Championships. In both 2017 and 2018 she won European bronze in the Junior Women division. At the 2024 British Nationals she was the silver medallist in Open Women behind Charlotte Millward.

Mark Osmond will be attending his third World Championships after representing GB at 7 Europeans, including in 2022 when he won bronze in the Senior Men division. He was unable to compete at the 2024 British Nationals due to injury but won silver in Senior Men in his most recent outing at the Nationals, in 2023.

The IWWF (International Waterski & Wakeboard Federation) World Wakeboard Championships are traditionally held every two years, while the Europeans are held annually.

At the 2024 European Wakeboard Championships, held in France in August, Team GB won bronze. The team originally placed fourth but have since been upgraded after the Swiss team was found to have included an ineligible rider.

The 2024 World Wakeboard Championships will take place between 20 and 27 October at Xiang Lake, Hangzhou City in Zhejiang Province, China.

Boat Wakeboarding

It is like a combination of snowboarding, skateboarding and surfing. The rider performs tricks over two runs while being towed by a boat. Judges watching from the boat determine the score, which is based on a number of criteria including the execution, intensity and composition of the tricks successfully performed. The highest score wins.

British Water Ski & Wakeboard (BWSW) is the sport’s national governing body and a non-profit making membership organisation. All its income is invested in developing and protecting water skiing and wakeboarding across the UK from the grassroots to our top athletes.

The International Waterski & Wakeboard Federation (IWWF) is the sport’s world governing body to which national organisations such as BWSW are affiliated.
