Five British riders, including a pair of teenage siblings, are heading to Italy for the IWWF Europe & Africa Boat Wakeboard Championships which begin next week.

The competition, at Lake Poma in Sicily, was arranged at short notice. It was due to be held in Belgium in September but was cancelled when water testing at the venue showed the presence of blue green algae and the Belgian government closed the waterways.

The changed dates have resulted in only five of the 25-strong GB squad being available to attend. All were medallists at this year’s UK National Wakeboard Championships.

They are:

Marley O’Toole, 13, (Boys). Marley, from Camberley, Surrey, is a pupil at Gordon’s School, West End, Woking. He is the 2023 UK National Boys’ Champion.

Isabelle Lloyd, 13, (Girls). Isabelle is a pupil at Erasmus Darwin Academy in Burntwood, Staffordshire. She lives in Burntwood and is the 2023 UK National Girls’ Champion.

Charlie Lloyd, 15, (Junior Men). Charlie is Isabelle’s brother. He also attends Erasmus Darwin Academy and lives in Burntwood. He won the silver medal in the Junior Men category at the 2023 UK Nationals

Travis Beaton, 22, (Open Men) from Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. Travis is also the Team Captain in Italy. He was the bronze medallist in Open Men at the 2023 UK Nationals.

Mark Osmond, 57, (Senior Men), from Elstead, Surrey. He is the 2023 UK Nationals silver medallist in Over 50s Men.

The Championships are being held from 30th October to 4th November at La Baietta Wakeboard Club, Lago Poma, Partinico, Sicily, Italy.

Boat wakeboarding is like a combination of snowboarding, skateboarding and surfing. The rider performs tricks over two runs while being towed by a boat. Judges watching from the boat determine the score, which is based on a number of criteria including height, style and difficulty of the tricks successfully performed. The highest score wins.

British Water Ski & Wakeboard (BWSW) is the sport’s national governing body and a non-profit making membership organisation. All its income is invested in developing and protecting water skiing and wakeboarding across the UK from the grassroots to our top athletes.

The IWWF is the International Waterski & Wakeboard Federation. It is the sport’s world governing body to which national organisations such as BWSW are affiliated.
